Dujarric: It is Important to Start Withdrawal of Foreign Fighters and Mercenaries from Libya – Al Marsad

The United Nations stressed on Monday, the necessity of reopening the coastal road linking western and eastern Libya, as part of the process of implementing the ceasefire agreement between the two parties to the conflict in Libya.

(LIBYA, 22 June 2021) –  Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, said during a press briefing at the UN that the reopening of the coastal road is critical to the implementation of the October ceasefire agreement.

Dujarric said he was “encouraged by the strong efforts of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission”, which he said was working with the Interim executive authority to ensure the opening of the coastal road.

He also said it was equally important to begin the withdrawal of foreign fighters, mercenaries, and other forces “without further delay”.

“We continue to intend to support the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, including through a phased deployment of UNSMIL (UN Mission in Libya) ceasefire monitoring component, as has been authorized by the Security Council,” said the UN spokesperson.
