Libyan Parties and Movements Condemn All Destabilization Plots on the Security of Tunisia – Al Marsad

A consortium of Libyan national political parties and movements issued a joint letter condemning any attempts to undermine the security and stability of Tunisia, and call for the removal of all foreign forces, mercenaries, and outlaw armed groups on Libyan territory.

(LIBYA, 24 August 2021) – This statement followed after the controversy of the leaked communication of the interim Government of National Unity’s Ministry of Interior on the correspondence from Tunisian Interpol that over 100 Tunisian extremists were based at Al-Watiya airbase and were planning to infiltrate Tunisia from the Libyan border to commit acts of terrorism—sparked massive criticism of the GNU and questions on how it is failing to handle security issues in the country.

A senior source at the Libyan Interior Ministry told AlMarsad and they link the speech of President Kais Saied on an assassination attempt on him and Tunisia‘s sudden announcement of canceling or revising its economic agreement with Turkey, and what was stated in the letter of the Tunisian Interpol.

It is a known fact that Al-Watiya airbase in under the control of the Turkish occupying forces and its mercenaries. The GNU’s Minister of Interior, Khaled Mazen, who is at the centre of the controversy, denied the allegations. He said on Monday: “Al-Watiya Air Base is under the control of the Ministry of Defense and in no case can it be allowed to serve as a platform for the implementation of any terrorist subversive acts that would destabilize security and stability.”

The consortium of Libyan national political parties and movements, in their joint statement today, were categorical in rejection of any interference by Libyan extremist elements on the security and stability of Tunisia and on its sovereignty.

The joint statement rejected the “presence of foreign forces, hordes of mercenaries, and outlaw armed groups on Libyan territory, and the real danger and threats they pose not only to the security and stability of Libya, but also to the peoples in neighboring countries, and we call on everyone to condemn the terrorist acts committed by these groups inside Libya or exported across its borders.”

The full English translation of the joint statement is published in full by AlMarsad:
